Saccadic displacements of the retinal image: effects on the visual system in the cat.

Electrical activity of lateral geniculate nucieus, optic tract and visual cortex wasrecorded in cats paralysed with curare. The responses to a low intensity flash of light werestudied when the flash was associated with the sudden movement (> 3OO”/sec)on the retina of animage involving contours. When the fiash occurred 50 msec after the beginning of the move-ment, the response was strongly diminished in amplitude, and was normat again if the dela!between both stimuli became longer than 200 msec. When the Rash occurred before themove-ment, it was on the contrary the potential induced by the movement which was reduced inamplitude with the same delays. These results show that any movement on the retina of a struc-tured image may alter the signals of stationary stimuli. It would be possible to explain on theselines the perceptive “suppression” observed during rapid ocular movements. Integration of saccadic eye movement signals into visual processing
Successful interpretation of visual motion requires information regarding ocular motion as well as information from retinal image motion. This suggests that eye movement information is integrated into visual motion perception and that the neural activity in visual cortex would be modulated by saccadic eye movements. We describe in this paper the characteristics of the neural activity in the cat...
THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS OF LASER PHOTOCOAGULATION AND VITRECTOMY IN EALES\'DISEASE
Eales' disease is an idiopathic obliterative retinal vasculopathy that is treated with laser photocoagulation, and/or vitrectomy. In order to determine visual outcomes and regression of retinal neovascularization following scattered peripheral retinal photocoagulation, and/or vitrectomy in cases with Eales' disease, we did a retrospective study of the records of these patients treated in La...
Visual Feature Based Registration of Images from Different Retinal Eccentricities
The development of variable resolution displays that correspond to the spatial resolution of the visual system motivates the examination of basic image processing methods such as image registration, using images with different resolutions. Such examination is further motivated by the visual stability that is the perception of a stable visual world in spite of saccadic eye movements, which sugge...
Morphological Exudate Detection in Retinal Images using PCA-based Optic Disc Removal
Diabetic retinopathy lesion detection such as exudate in fundus image of retina can lead to early diagnosis of the disease. Retinal image includes dark areas such as main blood vessels and retinal tissue and also bright areas such as optic disk, optical fibers and lesions e.g. exudate. In this paper, a multistage algorithm for the detection of exudate in foreground is proposed. The algorithm se...
Reduced-Reference Image Quality Assessment based on saliency region extraction
In this paper, a novel saliency theory based RR-IQA metric is introduced. As the human visual system is sensitive to the salient region, evaluating the image quality based on the salient region could increase the accuracy of the algorithm. In order to extract the salient regions, we use blob decomposition (BD) tool as a texture component descriptor. A new method for blob decomposition is propos...
Adaptation to an altered relation between retinal image displacements and saccadic eye movements.
The normal relation between retinal image displacement and saccadic eye movement was experimentally altered by moving a stimulus vertically up or down contingent upon a subject’s horizontal saccades. For half the subjects the stimulus moved up with a rightward and down with a leftward saccade. while for the other subjects the reverse was the case. Prior to and following 45 min of exposure to th...
